Hybrid black poplar re-pollarding | Chalder Lane, Sidlesham, West Sussex.

We recently carried out a tree re-pollarding service on two Hybrid black poplar trees in Chalder Lane, Sidlesham, West Sussex.

Generally, pollarding should only be carried out on certain vigorous species when fully dormant, such as Willow trees and London plane trees.

Pollarding is quite a crude management technique to control the overall size of a tree that is being retained. Pollarding should not be initiated on trees of a certain age as this can be detrimental.

The regrowth can be vigorous on species such as Poplar and requires cutting back to the same points every seven to ten years.

Over time the tree will develop a callus (knuckle) from where the regrowth emerges; this will protect the inner structures of the tree from decay by forming a barrier.

Arborists should never cut the knuckles off during tree surgery operations, as this is bad practice.
